Sharks Sweep Third Straight Home SSC Series

NSU Defeats Saint Leo 9-2 and 14-4 In SSC Doubleheader

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Apr. 17, 2010) - The Nova Southeastern University baseball team swept Saint Leo by the scores of 9-2 and 14-4 in a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Baseball Complex. The two wins helped the Sharks add onto a new program record 18 game home wining streak and improves the Sharks record to 29-17 on the season and 11-7 in SSC play. Saint Leo falls to 17-30 overall and 4-14 in SSC play.

"Anytime you can sweep a conference series it is huge," commented NSU senior catcher Matt Fisher. "Coming off a series where we lost two of three games at Barry, we wanted to show everyone that we belong in the Regional Tournament this year."

"This series put us back on track," Said senior third baseman Rhys Roberts. "Hopefully we can carry the momentum over into the remainder of our season and find a way to post-season play."

After scoring single runs in the second and third innings of game one, the Sharks broke the game open with a four run sixth inning. NSU opened the inning with a double by senior third baseman Rhys Roberts (Parkland, Fla.), a triple by senior second baseman Eric McCans (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and a two-run homer by junior designated hitter Haven FitzSimmonds (Loxahatchee, Fla.).

Roberts, the defending SSC Player of the Week, finished the game 3-5 with two runs scored and a RBI. McCans was 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Senior catcher Matt Fisher, who hit in the game winning runs on Friday night, was 3-4 with a run scored.

Junior starting pitcher Isaac Hicks (Ft. Myers, Fla.) earned the win to improve to 6-0 on the season. He allowed one earned run on four hits in five and two-thirds innings pitched. Junior Torey Ekey (Merritt Island, Fla.) and junior James Martinez (Hollywood, Fla.) finished the game for NSU.

Leading 5-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning the Sharks offense exploded for nine runs on eight hits to take a 14-4 lead. Junior shortstop Luis Penate (Miami, Fla.) hit a three run homer and Roberts hit a two run homer in the inning for NSU.

Senior outfielder Brayan Valencia (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) was 4-4 at the plate with a run scored and two RBI. Roberts continued his torrid hitting by going 3-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Penate concluded the game 2-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.

Junior starter Ryan Whelan (Boca Raton, Fla.) picked up the win, allowing four runs on five hits in three and two-thirds innings pitched. Ekey and junior Sean Tighe (Hobe Sound, Fla.) held the Lions scoreless for two innings before closer Sean Albury (Jr., Nassau, Bahamas) earned his 10th save of the season by pitching the final inning and one-third.

The Sharks will host Florida Tech in a non-conference game at 6 pm on Wednesday, April 21st at the NSU Baseball Complex.
